This is a short 30 minute presentation on diversity, equity and inclusion and tangible items to start implementing in your classroom. This is an introductory session that moves from textbook knowledge into implementation in the class. 

In today's society and this year's focus on diversity, equity and inclusion we say it, we hear it, but what does that actually mean?

What does that actually look like? What are some items that can be introduced into your class at this moment that creates an inclusive, welcoming environment where everyone feels appreciated, heard, and acknowledged. 

Take away items include: How to create a notes roster on "preferred" names and pronouns for online inclusion, removing subconscious unbiases, and how to initiate uncomfortable conversations into "teachable" moments within the course. 

Bio: Jessica De Leon Torres is a former student of SAC. Born and raised in San Antonio, Jessica graduated from Incarnate Word HS, spent two years at SAC, transferred up to the University of Northern Iowa, and obtained her Master's from UTSA. 

Aside from academics Jessica worked at Walt Disney World as an intern with the College Program, entertainment, and attractions. Jessica has been in higher education for over 7 years working in enrollment management, recruitment, and financial aid with UTSA and Our Lady of the Lake Admissions offices over the years.
